I read Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli as part of our assignment. At first, I felt the book was alittle "slow" and I did not think I was going to like it. However, by the third chapter I started to really get into it. I started thinking, What is she going to do next??
My neighbor, a thirteen year old male, noticed I was reading it and he got really excited that I was reading it. He said he had to read it the summer going into sixth grade for their summer reading. I found it funny when he asked me why I was reading a book like that? (meaning a children's book) I explained it was for school but I also told him that I enjoy reading children's books as well as young adult.
When I asked him if he liked the book, he said yes. He said that he really felt sorry for Stargirl in the beginning when everyone kept making fun of her because he knows what that feels like. ( I wanted to cry because he is the nicest kid ever! He is just alittle shy). He also made the comment that just because Stargirl had a unique personality, does not give everyone the right to treat her so differently. I found that so powerful and encouraged him to keep thinking that way!
